Notice of Tailings

Current law requires that municipal treasurers wait three years before an uncashed check may be deemed abandoned and start the process of reclaiming the funds.

Massachusetts General Law Chapter 200A, Section 9A provides Municipal Treasurers with a procedure for disposing of funds held by the Town which are deemed abandoned. This process is known as “tailings”. For more information, visit Massachusetts General Laws, or contact the Treasurer/Collector Office with questions.

Below is the “Notice of Names of Persons Appearing to Be Owners of Funds Held by the Town of Billerica and Deemed Abandoned”. This notice was posted on December 12, 2025. After the 60 days have passed, February 10, 2026, the notice of unclaimed funds will be advertised in the Lowell Sun. Payees will have 1 year from the date advertised in the Lowell Sun to claim their checks. To claim funds, please contact the Collector/Treasurer’s Office. You will need to submit a Request to Claim Funds form and provide a photo ID as well as any other documentation needed. Once all the necessary documentation is submitted, the Treasurer will review the claim and, if deemed valid, will re-issue a check.
