Laborer - Council on Aging Part-Time

Position Purpose:
Under the direction of the Facilities Director and/or the Council on Aging (COA) Director, the employee performs a variety of interior and exterior maintenance duties to ensure the Council on Aging facility is maintained in a clean, safe, and fully operational condition at all times.
Essential Functions:

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
- Perform thorough cleaning and disinfection of all bathrooms, including toilets, sinks, floors, walls, mirrors, and fixtures.
- Ensure all paper products and soap dispensers are stocked and functioning properly.
- Vacuum and damp mop common hallways and reception areas.
- Sweep and damp mop activity areas, including craft rooms and multipurpose spaces.
- Empty all wastebaskets and properly dispose of trash, including breaking down cartons and packing materials.
- Conduct general weekly cleaning, including dusting and vacuuming office areas and maintaining all spaces on both first and second floors.
- Clean interior windows on a quarterly basis.
- Perform periodic exterior duties, including:
- Cleaning cigarette receptacles
- Removing outdoor trash
- Sweeping entrances of sand and debris
- Maintaining safe, obstruction-free walkways
- Applying sand and salt during winter conditions
- Move furniture and office equipment as needed; set up rooms for daily activities and special events (e.g., aerobics, lunches, bingo).
- Work cooperatively with staff, volunteers, tax workers, and students.
- Inspect and maintain the kitchen grease trap, ensuring it is cleaned and sanitized regularly.
- Adjust timers on exterior lighting seasonally.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Facilities Director or COA Director.
- Identify and address or report safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
- Order cleaning supplies, paper products, and liners from approved vendors in coordination with the Facilities Department.
Education, Training and Experience:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience: 1–2 years of custodial experience preferred.
- Must enjoy working with senior citizens.
- Strong customer service orientation; ability to work well with volunteers.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Working knowledge of basic hand tools and demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
- Must successfully pass a CORI background check.

- Frequent walking, standing, bending, and stretching.
- Occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds using proper techniques.
- Ability to respond to interruptions and emergency situations.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals (e.g., bleach), requiring adherence to safety protocols and label instructions.
- Operation of equipment that may produce noise and vibration; must use appropriate caution.

Supervision Received: Work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Facilities and the Council on Aging Director.
