Wastewater Collections System Operator

General Functions

Under the direction of the Wastewater Superintendent, Collections System Supervisor and Collections System O&M Technician or designee, installs, repairs, and maintains wastewater machinery such as pumps, motors, generators, valves, chlorinating equipment, engines, gate valves, piping, flow recording and other equipment   involved in the collection and treatment wastewater. 

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid Massachusetts CDL Class B Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement.
  • New England Voluntary Collection System Certification Grade IV.
  • Knowledge of tools and technology used in the maintenance and repair of the Town’s wastewater machinery and equipment. 
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
  • Read documents and plans
  • Possess basic computer skills

Duties

  • Performs periodic preventive maintenance and emergency troubleshooting.  
  • Performs pipefitting, welding electrical and other skills, where permitted by licensing law, and in-house cleaning. 
  • Acts as work leader in the supervision of small work crews.   
  • Attends training sessions as required to stay abreast of updates or changes.
  • Operates equipment such as jet/vacuum truck, crawler, camera truck and associated  equipment. 
  • Operates computer and performs data entry and record keeping.
  • Participates in on call rotation for SCADA pump station monitoring.

Candidates who do not meet the requirement for New England Voluntary Collection System Certification Grade IV may be considered with the following conditions: 

  • Candidate will have one year from the date of hire to obtain a Grade 1 New England Voluntary Collection System Certification. Failure to obtain a Grade 1 license within this time frame may result in automatic termination.
  • Candidate will have two years from the date of hire to obtain a Grade 2 New England Voluntary Collection System Certification. Failure to obtain a Grade 2 license within this time frame may result in automatic termination.
  • Candidate will have four years from the date of hire to obtain a Grade 3 New England Voluntary Collection System Certification. Failure to obtain a Grade 3 license within this time frame may result in automatic termination.
  • Candidate will have seven years from the date of hire to obtain a Grade 4 New England Voluntary Collection System Certification. Failure to obtain a Grade 4 license within this time frame may result in automatic termination.
